5 Simple Yoga Asanas to Reduce Anxiety
Are you a mommy taking care of a young child? Or anyone else constantly in an anxious state of mind. I talk of mommies first because motherhood made me very anxious, and I also see it with my fellow mommies all the time. But yes anxiety does happen to anyone.
Anxiety generally comes from a constant worry for things that are uncertain. Mostly a worry for the future. Everyone does worry but some people like me and you worry so much that we can almost feel the anxiety building up within us. That restless feeling, not able to concentrate and do anything just when you have so much to do. Do you feel that too?
A little bit of thought of future is important. But too much is definitely going to take away the fun from now. It is really important for each of us to learn to live in the present moment. Living mindfully improves your life and relationships tremendously.
I wrote this blog about simple ways in which you can live more in the present. I have written it from my personal experience. Do read, it is very helpful.
So for me one of the things that helped me reduce anxiety was yoga. I was living alone with my 2 year old daughter. I was constantly anxious taking care of such a small child. I know we all do it, but some of us tend to be more perplexed by it.
So to keep myself calm and less stressed I started yoga and meditation. I had been meditating since 2009. Even during my pregnancy I was meditating regularly. But the extremely busy life of a new mommy, all by herself, made it extremely difficult to keep up with my practices.
So when I found myself being too anxious, and I saw that it was negatively affecting my parenting, I decided to go back to my yoga and meditation.
The following yoga poses will bring an instantaneous calm to you. But do remember to be with the pose. Being mindfully present while you are practicing makes it even more effective. I know it sounds like a vicious circle. But do remember that as a human we have the superpower to control our mind and thoughts. We have this choice not to get carried away in the whirlpool of anxious thoughts.
There are many more poses, but these are my all time favourite. And these can make up for an awesome 15 minute practice. Also they are very simple and can also be taken up by absolute beginners.
Reducing anxiety is just one benefit. These are going to benefit you in many more ways.
Child’s Pose — Balsana
Tree Pose — Vrikshasana
Standing Forward Bend
Legs up the wall or Waterfall Pose
Head to Knee Forward Bend — Janu sirsasana
Savasana
Finally whatever yoga that you do, it is extremely beneficial that you end your practice with Savasana. Savasana gives the ultimate rest to your body and mind. To someone just watching another lie in Savasana, it may seem that they are sleeping. But Savasana is done with full consciousness, and in this practice you reap the ultimate benefits of your entire yoga practice.
Also it is extremely beneficial to relax, rejuvenate and calm your anxious nerves
